Overrides sửa

Hi Caisse, thanks for your contributions so far. Since you've already started overriding pronunciations in various entries, I wanted to let you know that the override parameters are only temporary. I intend to replace them with more specific parameters, such as "SG v", to indicate specific exceptions. That way, contributors who aren't as familiar with IPA can still tell us about exceptions like , and the exceptions will automatically work with related dialects. (Soon I'm going to enable some additional dialects like Phú Yên and Quy Nhơn, once I double-check with some sources.) So if there are exceptions other than the /v/ in that I should know about, please continue to let me know. Thanks! – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 23:50, ngày 14 tháng 4 năm 2013 (UTC)Trả lời

Re: ang và anh sửa

First of all, the sound quality is poor in that recording, so the creakiness of the nặng tone may affect how you perceive the vowel. His -ng even sounds like /ŋ͡m/, which is particular to the North. I agree that his ô is different than the ô of a typically Northerner, but it's clear to me that he distinguishes between o and ô. Contrast with his pronunciation of the in từ bỏ. On the other hand, his pronunciation of trông is very clearly /tʂəŋ͡m˧˧/. As always, it's best to gather more data before drawing a conclusion. – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 01:39, ngày 15 tháng 4 năm 2013 (UTC)Trả lời

Re: hung sửa

No, that's what /u/ sounds like. /ʊ/ would easily be mistaken for "ư" in any dialect of Vietnamese. – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 12:22, ngày 15 tháng 4 năm 2013 (UTC)Trả lời

Are you sure? Can you find a good example of a /u/, then? At most it's a /ü/, but the difference is utterly negligible. Any more closed and you'll probably end up with a /w/. – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 12:35, ngày 15 tháng 4 năm 2013 (UTC)Trả lời

Ah, maybe you're hearing /ṳ/ – it's a little breathy because of the /h/. We're getting into minutiae here! If you want to hear a /ʊ/, listen to an English speaker say "book", and contrast that with sung, sung, bụng, lũng, cung, cùng. – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 12:38, ngày 15 tháng 4 năm 2013 (UTC)Trả lời

Sorry, that was unfair, because the /ʊ/ in "book" is of course unrounded. I think Thompson '87 makes sense, actually: in §2.57 he describes two forms of u: "upper high back rounded" (i.e., [u]) before p and m, and "lower high" ([u̞]) elsewhere. Of course, in IPA, [ʊ] subsumes [u̞], hence the confusion. (Note that Thompson uses an ad-hoc respelling scheme, not IPA.) – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 13:10, ngày 15 tháng 4 năm 2013 (UTC)Trả lời

Goals sửa

The purpose of the pronunciation tables here is to illustrate the various dialects of Vietnamese to a native Vietnamese speaker. The goal is not to teach non–Vietnamese speakers how to pronounce Vietnamese words accurately; that would be the job of the French Wiktionary, or w:en:Vietnamese phonology, or a book on Vietnamese at the English Wikibooks. The transcriptions here must account for notable differences between dialects without distinguishing between every allophone, even if some allophones may seem entirely distinct to a non-native speaker. /ʊ/ vs. /u/ is one distinction we could do without. Few of our readers are as familiar with IPA as you are, so we need to keep the repertoire of symbols to a minimum, by maintaining suitably broad transcriptions. I hope that explains why I willingly accept some of your suggestions and express strong skepticism about others. Nevertheless, I'm grateful that you've taken the time to uncover many genuine bugs in the template, and I look forward to working with you to improve the information presented here. – Nguyễn Xuân Minh (thảo luận, đóng góp) 13:24, ngày 15 tháng 4 năm 2013 (UTC)Trả lời
